How to make French Hoods

French hoods, the bejewelled headpieces of the Tudor era, seem to be one of the most mysterious and difficult to recreate items – a real challenge for any Tudor re-enactor wanting to portray an upp…

ca. 1555 Caterina de' Medici by ? (Galleria degli Uffizi - Firenze, Toscana, Italy) | Grand Ladies

This image shows Catherine de Medici wearing one of the costliest gowns ever depicted. Besides being opulent, her gown is a tour-de-force in mid-century fashion. It has an early, conical, farthingale swelling from her hips, puffed and slashed false sleeves matching her kirtle, a French hood, and a full ruff made with an early form of lace such as point de Venise.

Broider Me 'Bethan

Here are some ideas for the other option that I am considering for my upcoming event - Elizabethan coats or 'frocks'. The advantages with this option are that I have several that are mostly finished, I am familiar with construction techniques, I have ironed out the kinks in my pattern, I have completed loose under-kirtles that are ready to wear, and I can make a low-necked version to help keep me cool. The disadvantage is that I really need to wear a hoop to make this style look it's best on…

Catherine de Medici by the Donna Al Potere' exhibition in Florence. Very large beadwork, since she married into a French family, I wonder whether this is more French or Italian influenced.
