Bioswales are curb plantings that keep waterways cleaner during large rainstorms. Portland installed as many as 1350 bioswales, managing 125 million gallons of unfiltered oily street water, which means cleaner rivers and waterways. Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services has a program called Green Street Stewards where local businesses volunteered to remove waste, weed, and maintain upkeep of their local bioswales.
