The Pitfalls and the Potential of the New Minimalism | The New Yorker ~ Beware the shallow end ~ "Minimalism is easily transformed from a philosophy of intentional restraint into an aesthetic language through which to assert a form of walled-off luxury—a self-centered and competitive impulse that is not so different from the acquisitive attitude that minimalism purports to reject." The Stories That Clutter Tells | New York Times
Interesting article about clutter vs minimalism. In behavioral psychology terms, “terminal materialism” refers to acquiring & valuing an object purely for its intrinsic properties — like a fancy new iPhone (that will soon be obsolete). The worthless-looking junk we hang on to often exemplifies "instrumental materialism", valued for its connection to another person, a place, a time in our lives, a meaningful affiliation. These can take obvious forms — a wedding ring, a crucifix. #cluttercore
