Worn by the Sami people, (also spelled Saami), one of the indigenous people of northern Europe inhabiting Sapmi, which today encompasses parts of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia, as well as the border area between south and middle Sweden. This form of clothing, known as gakti, is traditionally worn both in ceremonial contexts and while working, particularly when herding reindeer.

Sarakka, Juksakka, and Uksakka. Sami goddesses. Akka-goddesses. In Sámi mythology, the first akka was Maderakka and her daughters were Sarakka, Uksakka and Juksakka. Some Sámi thought they lived under their kota tents. Sarakka helped during the pregnancy. Juksakka had a bow and she guided boys.

The Sami inhabited the region long before the concept of national borders existed. Most experts agree that the Sami culture can be traced back to around 2000 to 2500 years.
