hip to be square.

The 5th graders are going retro this week. Some with a sculpture project and others with a collage project. 3 classes are creating space invader wood block sculptures that are inspired by the video game and the sculptures of Jason Torchinsky. The other 3 classes are creating abstract collages inspired by the geometric forms from minecraft and other 8-bit video games. Both projects have been big hits. A few things to think about... 1. Make sure, when starting a grade level sculpture project…

Secret Code Collage: Auguste Herbin (2nd grade)

I was excited to find a new inspiration piece for my second grade lesson on geometric shape when I came across the captivating work of French artist Auguste Herbin online. Many artists call this type of work "Art for art's sake," because it doesn't have to represent anything other than the interaction of elements like color, shape, and space. Adding to the excitement, as I read…

Color Mixing Trees (1st)

The inspiration for this project comes from Beth Carter's blog, "It's Art Day". The first project I decided to do with my first graders this year was a primary/secondary color mixing review/learning it again for the first time because they don't remember anything they learned in art last year. :) We started out by reading "Monsters Love Colors" by Mike Austin and reviewed/learned how the primary colors red, yellow, and blue can be mixed together to create secondary colors (and beyond!)…
