Nature is the ultimate designer and engineer. Humans have much to learn in order to improve our designs and to live in harmony with all living things.
In Alaska, wood frogs freeze for seven months, thaw and hop away
~~Each September, the wood frogs of Alaska do a very strange thing: They freeze. They do not freeze totally solid, but they do freeze mostly solid for seven months, then they thaw and hop away | LA Times~~
Biomimicry in Action: 13 Technologies Inspired by Nature
Nature has come up wih some pretty amazing designs. These examples of biomimicry in action cover robotics, architecture, transportation and more.
The year in biomimicry: Robots inspired by cheetahs and moon jellies
The well-known glow from fireflies is an example of bioluminescence and is caused by the reaction of luciferin with the enzyme luciferase. A team at Syracuse University has been able to produce a stronger light from this method. Applications may include night-vision goggles, cameras and possibly zero-energy lighting displays.

Biomimicry Pictures: Nature Yields New Ideas for Renewable Energy and Efficiency
A school of snappers arranges itself to reduce drag and increase efficiency, much as a flock of geese flies in a "V". Arranging vertical turbines in a school-of-fish pattern allows them to be placed closer together without the turbines' wakes interfering. "We wanted to achieve something similar [to fish schools], where instead of minimizing energy consumed we wanted to maximize energy generated," said Dabiri, of California Institute of Technology's Center for Bioinspired Engineering.
