Extant originals - European medieval, Herjolfsnes No.39
The is probably the best preserved garment amongst the finds from the late 14th century Herjolfsnes. It likely belonged to a woman about 30-40 of age, 150 cm tall. Triangular gores were inserted into the front and back pieces. The sidegores were made from 1 piece of fabric that has been extended down to the armpit with additional pieces, and divided in the middle by a false seam. Short sleeves had one inserted gore on the base in the back.

he so-called Venetian coat in the National Museum of the Renaissance is one of the rare costumes from the end of the 16th century conserved in France. The fabric is composed of a network of small juxtaposed lozenges in brown silk on a rose colored base, similar to the small child’s garment preserved in the Landesmuseum in Detmold.
