A view from a war Transport report into street layouts. A view of one of the many 'back to back' housing streets typified by Coronation St and that would, often quite rightly, be condemned as slums and cleared in the post-war period. Bad as they often were some of the housing that replaced these streets hasn't weathered well - and has now been, in turn, demolished. Some of these terraces that were 'renovated' have at times kept some sense of community - but we forget how basic these houses…
Albert Street Peelers
Manchester City Police peelers parade in the yard of the city's Albert Street Police Staion in the 1850s.
