Heather on 9 Parts of Desire: "I'd love to hear an American say, 'That Bedouin woman is just like my aunt.' But at the same time, I want American audiences to walk out a little confused, not able to say, 'Oh, I get it,' but rather to understand how difficult it is to grasp the psyche of people who have lived under Saddam for 30 years with American support, then had a war with Iran, resulting in 1.5 million deaths, followed by 13 years of sanctions and two wars under American firepower.

9 Parts of Desire is a one-woman play written and performed by theatre artist Heather Raffo. The play, encompassing the lives of 9 different Iraqi women, was an instant off-broadway hit. Raffo was inspired to write this play after her experiences visiting her father’s homeland, Iraq, in 1993. Raffo took the next 10 years to complete the play and it was originally performed in August of 2003 during the Edinbergh Fringe Festival at the Traverse Theater.

From a NYT article on the show: "The play's emphasis on sex is inherent in its title. It comes from a rare translation of a little-known saying, or "hadith," from a Muslim text, the 100 Maxims of Imam Ali, who led the Muslim world a few generations after Muhammad. "God created sexual desire in 10 parts; then he gave 9 parts to women and 1 to men," it says.
