William Gould

William Gould (1735-1812), a pupil of Capability Brown, came to St Petersburg in 1776 and worked as gardener to Prince Grigory Potemkin. He created the gardens of the Tauride Palace from 1783-89 and also created several gardens in the Crimea. He was also later Court Gardener to Catherine the Great and to Alexander I, under whom he laid out the Alexander (or Admiralty) Garden in the heart of St Petersburg.
