A Native American Lakota Plains Sioux Lizard Shaped Beaded Umbilical Cord Amulet,

A SIOUX BEADED HIDE FETISH. c. 1890. These were typically hung from a baby's cradle board & when the remaining piece of umbilical cord dried up and fell off the infant's naval, the umbilical cord was concealed inside. The child would keep the fetish for the rest of their lives as a symbolic & sacred connection to their mother (as the umbilical cord literally connected the two together as one).

A SIOUX BEADED HIDE FETISH.Some tribes used this for the newborn boy's umbilical cord, which would be placed with them when buried. Newborn girls had a turtle fetish.
