Tank crews did what they could to improve survivability. Improvised armor often included logs, spare tracks, and in some desperate cases, even cast concrete.

Good shot of an early Panzer IV Ausf. D (?) Note the short barreled 75mm canon. The early Panzer IV’s were meant for infantry support, not tank-tank combat. It posed a severe problem on the eastern front when they encountered the far superior T-34’s with their long barreled 76mm canon.
