Way back in 1975 George Lucas commissioned the concept designer and illustrator Ralph McQuarrie to illustrate the characters and scenes for an upcoming sci-fi movie he was working on. That movie of course turned out to be the original Star Wars.
Original Star Wars concept painting by Ralph McQuarrie shows the Millennium Falcon in Docking Bay Two different versions of this painting exist. The original painting shows a bulkier Falcon with massive landing gear on the front and back of the ship.
There is no doubt that Ralph McQuarrie’s sublime art was fundamental in shaping the success of Star Wars, and enriching the galaxy far, far away. For years his work has been archived and championed, but a new book is collecting some of his best (and some of his rarest) Star Wars art in a lavish volume, and we’ve got an exclusive look inside.
