Fairmount Park, currently 9200 acres, grew from the Lemon Hill estate of Henry Pratt whose land was originally owned by Robert Morris, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Dedicated to the public in 1855, the Park came to include mansions and waterworks. In 1876, Fairmount Park hosted the 1876 US Centennial Exposition and opened the first zoo in the United States, The Philadelphia Zoological Gardens. The Park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
