Samurai kabuto, 17th century H: 9 1/2 in, W: 13 1/8 in (H: 24.13 cm, W: 33.34 cm). The peony piece ("maedate") is kinmekki. The use of ceremonial helmets originates in battlefield dress from at least the Momoyama Period, but continued through Edo Period for special occasions. The helmet is made with a black lacquer ground, gold taka maki-e, and mother-of-pearl. The front piece (maedate) is made of gild bronze and interior is coated with pressed gold leaf.
