Baron Haussmann- redesign of Paris 1860's: Commissioned by Napoleon III to instigate a program of planning reforms in Paris. Haussmann's plan tore up many of the old, twisting streets and rundown apartment houses, and replacing them with the wide, tree-lined boulevards, expansive gardens, uniform building heights, and anchoring elements including the Arc de Triomphe and the Grand Opera House.

Baron Haussmann was commissioned to redesign Paris in the This resulted in the tearing down of much of existing medieval Paris to make way for wide, straight roads and entire blocks of buildings with a uniform height and similar features.
