Consolidated B-24J-150-CO Liberator 44-40210 854th BS, 491st BG, 8th AF Hit by light-flak on the September 18,1944 low-level supply drop mission for the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in the area of Eindhoven,Holland. The plane was badly hit in the right wing and the pilot, Capt. James K. Hunter, decided to belly her into a field, but lost the #3 engine at an altitude of 50 ft., causing the right wing to dip low enough to touch the ground.

While flying over Italy, this B-17 had most of her tail shot away.  Still, the pilot managed to get her home.  When she was hit, the tail-gunner was blown out into her slipstream.  Miraculously, he was uninjured and managed to get his chute open and land safely. B-24 Liberator....My Uncle Chester Guzik was the flight engineer on one during WW2...his plane was shot down over Holland on a return bombing run from Germany...they dropped bombs over a flack factor that made the AA ball bearings...three crew members made it out of the plane before it crashed...Uncle Chester sadly was not one of them...he perished along with four others in the crash. He is buried over in Holland.

My grandfather was a pilot of this beast during the last part of WWII. He flew 16 combat missions over Austria and Southern Germany. Adrian D.
