Photo by @nickcobbing Heres a carpet of frost flowers from the Arctic sea ice. These frost flowers are a common feature that tend to grow on new thin sea ice under cold and calm conditions. Brine freezes into the delicate crystals of the flowers. The formation and role of the frost flowers is still not completely understood and scientists are keen to research them further particularly how they release sea salt aerosol into the atmosphere. This picture was taken whilst on assignment for…

WEBSTA @ natgeo - Photo by @TimLaman. My first sunrise ever at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, a few days ago. What a spectacular place! It’s simply mind-boggling how beautiful and diverse our natural world is. The fresh snow was beautiful, but the temperature at -21 degrees C ( -6 degrees F) was not for the feint-hearted. Unique soft limestone formations here have eroded into these unusual “hoodoo” formations largely through the freeze-thaw cycle that happens so many days of the year...

Heading into cold months recalls time spent in the Arctic Circle. These are workers at Norilsk Nickel one of the biggest nickel plants in the world. Tough place to live and work esp in wintertime. Norilsk is listed as one of the 10 most polluted places on earth. @joemcnallyphoto #winter #nickel #mining by natgeo

Photo by @andywcoleman // Adult cheetah are generally not good tree climbers but will jump up on low hanging branches and fallen trees They spend a great deal of time looking for high places to search for both predators and prey. This young male was definitely in search of prey but was hunting in an area that was virtually free of other animals on this afternoon. He ended up taking a nap instead while waiting for his luck to turn. Taken while on safari at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge in South…

Photo by @andywcoleman // Earlier this week the government of Ecuador announced the creation of a more than 15000-square-mile marine sanctuary around two of the northern Galápagos islands: Darwin and Wolf. Together with 21 smaller conservation areas scattered through the volcanic archipelago over 18000 square miles or about one third of the water around the Galápagos Islands are fully protected from fishing and other extractive industries. With the convergence of four major currents in the…
