Polly Turner’s sampler, worked in is one of the earliest known examples made at Mary Balch’s school in Providence, Rhode Island. According to tradition,

Nothing makes me happier right this second than seeing those two drunk-looking deer at the bottom of the sampler.  I am crazy about samplers when the elements look like they've been designed and executed entirely by their young stitchers.

Esther Iddison sampler 1847.  A lot of red -- can't have too much of that, though.  This one is not as interesting to me as a lot of the others I've pinned. I do like the house, and some of the floral motifs are interesting.
