A ‘makrama’ (napkin). From the Göynük region (halfway Bolu and Bilecik). Early 20th century. ‘Two-sided’ (identical on both sides) embroidery, silk & metallic on cotton cloth. If edged, the item could also be used as a ‘yemeni’ (large head scarf) for women. In Göynük town, tens of these ‘makrama’ cover the cenotaph sarcophagi of local ‘saints’, generally dervishes from important Soufi Orders or connected with the Ottoman power. (Kavak Collection of Anatolian Textiles -Antwerpen/Belgium).
