The black-headed grosbeak is a medium-size seed-eating bird in the same family as the northern cardinal, the Cardinalidae. It is sometimes considered conspecific with the rose-breasted grosbeak with which it hybridises on the American Great Plains.

Northern flicker - the newest discovery in my neighborhood. I noticed it weeks ago off in the distance. The salmon-red color under his wings caught my eye but its identity eluded me until yesterday. After all the rains he came back out for some bugs in our tree in the front yard. Now that I know what to look for I've seen him three times!
