The Vanderbilt Mansion in New York, once stood at 57th St. and Fifth Ave., the base of what is now Central Park. This was the home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, built in 1883 and stood until 1926. Cornelius was the eldest grandson of Commodore Vanderbilt. Feeling that others were trying to outdo his house, he bought all the property on the 5th Avenue block. He then hired George B.
