1840 Dinner Dress via The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.--cinnamon seems to have been a popular color in California, and the ruffled skirt is seen in paintings of Californio day dresses. Most of the trading ships came from Boston.

American, Day Dress of beige, green & maroon printed silk with a removable lace collar and undersleeves. Trimmed with garnet-type stone & gold metal buttons and soft green fringe.

Dress, American, circa 1868. Alpaca, velvet ribbon, and covered buttons, silk tassels, cotton linen inner bodice, glazed cotton lining, and metal closure. Skirt fastened at left front with most of fullness in inverted box pleats in back, longer in back for train. Trimmed around neck, sleeves, waist, and bottom of skirt with bands of pinkish-red velvet ribbon. Purple silk tassels on sleeves, front, and waistband. Via Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Two sloping boned darts each side front from bust to waist. Side seams and button backs also boned. Padded from shoulder to bust. Separate skirt with blue silk waistband. Watch pocket.
