French designer, Rene Lalique, (1860-1945) ornate jewelry.  This example of his work, was fashioned for French actress, Sarah Bernhardt, (1844-1923). Who was a very famous stage actress, during the Belle Epoche in France, and graced the American stage as well, during the Gilded Age. Lalique created many ornate jewelry pieces that Bernhardt also wore as part of her stage costumes.

“René Lalique became one of France’s leading jewelers in the art nouveau style. He designed very ornate jewelry and headdresses for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. She wore his jewelry on stage as costumes and off stage as her own personal collection.
