Byzantine. Empress Theodora. 500 AD-548 AD. Wife of Emperor Justinian. The Byzantine era was not one of makeup but it was heavily decorated with lots of jewelry. The more wealthy you were, the more jewelry you wore on a daily basis.

Empress Theodora and the Byzantine Empire were the inspiration behind Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris-Byzance collection. Coco Chanel herself loved Byzantine jewelry and she borrowed motifs for the jewelry she designed.
