After several years in decommission she was recommissioned for WWI as a minelayer in the Irish Channel. returning tho the Pacific, she was a receiving ship at Pearl Harbor and subsequetly sold for scrap in 1942.

Illinois was laid down on 10 February 1897 by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company of Newport News, Virginia. She was launched on 4 October 1898 nd commissioned on 16 September 1901, Captain George A. Converse in command.
