The age of the flying boat was ending when the first took to the air, in 1952. The order was cancelled and the 3 were scrapped after approaches to the RAF & USAF for their use as transports failed.

Its length, slender cross-section and intended purpose led to its being nicknamed the "Flaming Pencil". It failed to attain the designed M2 speed and couldn't maintain top speed long enough to study thermal effects of supersonic flight. Cancelled in 1964.
