Fabergé Dexter bull, circa 1907. Obsidian with cabochon ruby eyes. Commissioned by King Edward VII, 1907 (the Sandringham Commission). Among the herds of cattle kept by King Edward VII at Sandringham were pedigree shorthorns, red polls, Jerseys and Irish Dexters. This carving is made of obsidian, a natural volcanic glass which when highly polished has a velvety sheen, particularly suited to replicating the shiny quality of the coat of a well-groomed bull. The Royal Collection: Duckling Creator: Henrik Emanuel Wigström A duckling, carved in pale cream-brown aventurine quartz with cabochon ruby eyes and chased red gold legs. The aventurine quartz used for this study of a duckling lacks the naturalism of other hardstones selected to represent the true colouring of a particular animal, however the animal sculptures themselves are very carefully observed.
