Family Friend (1873) - Some young girls employed as maids would start work at 4am and not go to bed until 10pm. The only time off would be on Sunday afternoons. Sunday mornings would be spent in church. Many girls would have to travel far from home to take up work as a domestic servant and would only return and see their families once or twice a year. - Library of Birmingham.
