Robe à la Française Date: Culture: French Medium: silk, bast fiber. The striped textile here is indicative of the change in aesthetics around 1770 to a more neoclassical taste, less florid the the silks of the previous decades.

Dress (Open robe and petticoat); 1765; silk, linen. Long robe with fitted bodice, sleeves and full skirt open through the centre front to reveal the petticoat. The robe and petticoat are both cut from light weight silk taffeta woven with blurred flowers on a stem with leaves in pink and mauve on an off white background.
