Exploring Universe: Thomas Wright presents an alternate view of the Milky Way galaxy in cross section. Plates XXXI and XXXII show the universe filled with many systems like our own, each a star-filled shell surrounding its own "eye of Providence" - from A

n-a-s-a: The Andromeda Galaxy is 2 million light years away from us so what we see now is how it appeared 2 million years ago. It will collide with our Milky Way in 2 billions years from now. The two galaxies are heading towards each other at a rate of 430 km/hr. A billion years from now Andromeda will loom as a spectacular site eventually swelling to fill half of the night sky.

The Antennae Galaxies are undergoing a galactic collision. Located in the NGC 4038 group with 5 other galaxies, they are named for the two long tails of stars, gas and dust ejected from them as a result of the collision resemble an insect's antennae. The nuclei of the two galaxies are joining to become one giant. Most galaxies probably undergo at least one significant collision in their lifetimes. This is likely the future of our Milky Way when it collides with the Andromeda Galaxy

The merging Antennae galaxies - As the two galaxies smash together, billions of stars are born, mostly in groups and clusters of stars. From Hubble Telescope

Okay this picture makes it easy for me to explain to the people who don't know what this really is, tilt your computer screen until the milky way is level with the ground(your computer will be sideways) now what you are doing is looking towards the center
