Silk Damask ~12th c.~ Sicily ~ Brown griffins on ochre background. This griffin motifs on silk were originally woven for a vestment in 1181 in Sicily. Influence of Greece, Byzantium and Egypt can be seen in many Sicilian textiles and despite a short Islamic rule their decorative ideas influenced the arts of Sicily, including this pattern.
