Only four 1861 Confederate Half Dollar coins were ever struck. The original coins are considered priceless, and re-strikes from the original dye are worth $4,000-$10,00 dollars. The original coins were struck at the New Orleans Mint, the only US mint to fall into non US possession. It was captured by the Confederate Army on January 26, 1861, and it was recaptured by 250 Marines of the U.S.S. Pensacola under the command of Admiral David Farragut in April, 1862.
