P.L. (Pamela Lyndon) Travers, author of eight books on English nanny Mary Poppins, died on April 23, 1996 at the age of 96. Originally from Australia, Ms. Travers (born Helen Goff) began her literary career writing poetry. She wroter her first Mary Poppins book in 1934. When the Disney film was released in 1964 she cried at the premiere - because she disliked the film version so much.
