The Stone Bridge was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, for one reason, to make it easier to ship Cambria Iron Steel. The bridge was constructed in 1887-1888 by Alexander G. Sparks and Shipley W. Evans. The bridge was designed by the "Stone Man," Pennsylvania Railroad Chief Engineer William H. Brown. This bridge replaced an all iron truss bridge, built in 1850.
