Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769) was an extremely influential person in Japanese Zen Buddhism.  He is credited with reviving the Rinzai school (one of the three sects of Japanese Zen Buddhism, the others being Soto and Obaku) after centuries of stagnation.  Essentially, he returned the school to its roots of heavy focus on meditation and koans.

Zen Buddhist paintings on display in Beijing -An exhibit of Zen Buddhist paintings on Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism in China is on display at the Beijing Museum of Visual Art. A total of over 50 pieces from Li Zhi, a Zen painting master from the Shaolin Monastery and a member of the China Artists Association, are on display through Nov. 24. According to Li, the concept of Zen involves the pursuit of harmony between mankind and nature.
