For centuries the beautifully figured birch burl kuksa has been the drinking vessel of the Sami, the indigenous people of far northern Scandinavia. Hand carved in Lapland, traditionally salted and cured, these are light, bounce if dropped, and have better insulating properties than porcelain or enamel, which of course stops them freezing to lips during arctic winters, maybe not such a problem here, but the principle remains. Just rinse with cold water after use. Believed the ultimate camping…

We drank from birch kuksa cups when we were in Tromso earlier this year. Such beautiful and simple cups - and great for the cold. But prices are steeeep for genuine handmade ones!

Guksi (Kuksa) (handmade camping cup). Invented by Sami people of northern Scandinavia. Very useful cup, you will never have to wash it with soap, only with water. Washing only with water keeps it clean because it is specially made.
