Roll clouds are just one of the weird weather phenomenon that can happen when winds go wild. Roll clouds are a type of arcus cloud, which is a category of low cloud formations. They sometimes form along with storms too, born out of the storm’s downdraft. Sinking cold air causes warm, moist air on the planet’s surface to climb to higher altitudes, where the moisture condenses into cloud form. Img: Roll cloud in Uruguay

A roll cloud extends far into the distance in Maldonado, Uruguay. A roll cloud is a low, horizontal, tube-shaped, and relatively rare type of arcus cloud. Roll clouds usually appear to be “rolling” about a horizontal axis.

The eerie scene above, captured in January 2009 at Las Olas beach in southern Uruguay, hints at how far roll clouds can stretch out. It also reveals another quirk: They tend to work alone, often snaking through the sky without a storm in sight.

What’s that round, dense-looking object hovering in the sky?Lenticular clouds form at high altitudes, aligned to the wind direction, and often seem to stay in the same place while other clouds move around them

No, it's not a UFO. It's a lenticular cloud, a rare form of cloud. Some scientists think that lenticular clouds account for some sightings of UFOs.

Lenticular Clouds - Lenticular clouds sometimes form at the crests of these waves. Under certain conditions, long strings of lenticular clouds can form, creating a formation known as a wave cloud.

One of the strangest shaped clouds of all, the altocumulus standing lenticularis. Often mistaken for UFOs, this cloud is usually caused by air being forced over a mountain or otherwise temporarily forced aloft.
