Jane Wilkinson Long ... orphaned at age 14 and widowed at 24, Jane led a long and hard life in Texas. However, her independent and determined character earned for her the title "MOTHER OF TEXAS." Although widowed shortly after arriving in Texas in 1820, still young and beautiful in a country with few women, Jane had many suitors including several well-to-do, notable Texans such as William Travis, Stephen Austin, Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar. She died, still a widow, in 1880.

Jane Herbert Wilkinson Long was a Texas pioneer. She is known as the "Mother of Texas" because she gave birth to the first Anglo-American child in Texas.
