"Most people know the story of this famous Austrian family that was the subject of the musical play and film The Sound of Music.

" I was 16 and left to care for my 6-year-old sister. I found us an apartment outside the ghetto and traded clothes for food. In 1942 news spread that the ghetto was being liquidated. I decided to help some Jews escape the final roundups by hiding them. I moved into a cottage for more space. Soon, 13 Jews were living in a secret space in my attic.  Przemyl was liberated on July 27, 1944. The Jews that 17-year-old Stefania helped to hide all survived the war.

During the Holocaust, sixteen-year-old Stefania and her six-year-old sister harboured thirteen Jewish men, women and children in the attic of their home for two-and-a-half years. Both were later honored as the Righteous

Henk Drogt served as a policeman during WW2 when he was ordered in 1943 to round up Jews in the city of Groningen, in the north of the country. He refused and joined the Dutch resistance, helping many allied pilots who were shot down escape and get back to Britain. In August 1943 he was arrested and later executed by the Nazis. His son received in his father's name on September 22, 2008 on his 65th birthday, Israel's highest honor for people who rescued Jews from the Holocaust.

Boruch Spiegel, who died recently in Montreal, Canada at 93, was one of the last three surviving fighters of the Warsaw ghetto uprising of 1943.A member of the Jewish Combat Organization, Spiegel and his comrades attacked the Germans when they entered the ghetto for another deportation in Jan 1943. Outnumbered and without much weaponry, the Jewish fighters fought the Germans off and kept up the fight through April 1943. Spiegel was able to escape and later joined the Polish resistance.

Boruch Spiegel, one of the last surviving fighters of the Warsaw ghetto uprising of in which a vastly outgunned band of 750 young Jews held off German soldiers for more than a month with crude arms and Molotov cocktails, died on May 9 in Montreal.

Asked after the war why he helped the people in hiding, Victor Kugler replied:  "I couldn’t do otherwise. I had to help them: they were my friends. In never told my wife anything, she was very ill. I didn’t want to worry her and so I couldn’t talk about it at home. For the people in hiding, their lives changed completely. They had to be completely silent, especially during the day. But for us helpers too it was a tense, frightening time."
