Edvard Munch c. 1890. Exhibition of 'Melancholy' (jealousy) 1891) depicting a distressed man subject to a disastrous love affair. When the painting was exhibited in 1891 in Oslon Munch was asked to exhibit in Berlin in a one-man show. Such controversy was sparked ("The Munch Affair") that the show closed after a week. Munch wrote in a letter; "Never have I had such an amusing time—it's incredible that something as innocent as painting should have created such a stir."
