The earliest symbolism on gravestones at the cemetery at St. Paul's Church National Historic Site dates to the 1750s and it takes two general forms. One is the heart, generally understood to have symbolized God's love, and the other is a star-like design or pinwheel, which probably represented heaven, or all things under heaven. These emblems were the first steps away from Puritan beliefs that prohibited any form of religious iconography.

Elija Cowles was best known for his pronounced profile portraits on his gravestones. On this stone, you can see two small examples of his standard fare in the shoulders of the stone. The elaborate work that plays center stage is simply amazing here - the level of detail and the fluidity of the carving are truly beautiful. This stone is part of a small number of stones that to me represent the pinncle of colonial New England sandstone carving.
