Major Richard D. Winters: I cherish the memory of a question my grandson asked me the other day, when he said: “Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?” Grandpa said, “No. But I served in a company of heroes.”  Major Winters served in Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, better known as the "Band of Brothers".

The US 101st ‘Screaming Eagles’ Airborne Division jumped into Holland in a daylight aerial assault on 17 September 1944, north of Eindhoven.  The bridges assigned to the 101st Airborne at Best and Son were a full 8 miles north of Eindhoven.  They would later refer to the road between Best and Son as "Hell's Highway."
