Walter Bonatti in 1965 prepares to climb the north face of the Matterhorn in the winter, alone. The north face of the mountain at the time had no direct route for climbing the north face. Bonatti changed that and subsequently trekked his own route, the first route, up the north face of the mountain later called the Bonatti Route. Its summit is 4,478 meters (14,690 ft) high, making it one of the highest peaks in the Alps.
