Baltimore Coat of Arms, Ferryland.   This coat of arms belonged to Sir George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, who arrived in 1627 and founded a colony of English Catholics at Ferryland. However this was a short-lived endeavour, as Baltimore quickly abandoned his colony due to the harsh winter climate.

Cecil Calvert - Cecil Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore, created the colony of Maryland under King Charles I as a haven for Catholics. Since England persecuted Catholics, Calvert knew it would be difficult to stay clear of religious problems. It has been said the King Charles I allowed Calvert to be the proprietor of Maryland because he was secretly a Catholic.

Cecil became the Lord of Baltimore after his father, George Calvert, passed away when he was Whilst King Charles I has given his father the land, the official charter didn't go through until George had already died.
