In addition to mountain gorillas, Virunga has a family of Eastern Lowland Gorillas, or Grauer’s Gorillas, in the central western section of the park. This baby Grauer’s gorilla was rescued from poachers in October last year, and named Shamavu after the ranger who saved him.

Virunga - More good news regarding the mountain gorilla families. The team of rangers and trackers found 26 members of the Kabirizi family on Wednesday, and yesterday they found the rest – all 33 members! You can help, they need to raise monthly support for our ranger rations in the gorilla sector. Money is tight due to the loss of tourism since the fighting.
