Many of the monuments are WWII and concentration camp memorials commissioned by president Josip Broz Tito in the 60s and 70s. Following the fall of socialism they were and remain abandoned and forgotten.

The Makedonium, Kruševo, Yugoslavia, photographed by Jan Kempenaers. Built in 1974 by Jordan and Iskra Grabulovski and commissioned by Tito, the Makedonium is a monument to the 1903 Macedonian uprising against the Ottoman Empire.
