Little is truly known about the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu (sometimes also known as Laozi or Lao Tze), who is a guiding figure in Daoism (also translated as Taoism), a still popular spiritual practice.

A bronze cowrie container, Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 25 AD), Yunnan Provincial Museum, Kunming. This hourglass-shaped container features no fewer than eight yaks, distributed naturalistically around the circumference of its lid, and feline-form handles. It rests on tiny lion feet. The overall design is almost absurdly unbalanced, yet somehow endearing.

Sanxingdui culture bronze artifact, State of Shu (蜀), an ancient state in what is now Sichuan, China. Shu was based on the Chengdu Plain, in the western Sichuan basin. This independent Shu state was conquered by the state of Qin in 316 BC, but recent archaeological discoveries at Sanxingdui and Jinsha thought to be sites of Shu culture indicate the presence of a unique civilization in this region before the Qin conquest.
