Etchberger, Richard, U.S. Air Force, Vietnam, Medal of Honor~ His team of technicians were manning a top secret defensive position when the base was overrun by an enemy ground force, his entire crew lay dead or severely wounded so single-handedly held off the enemy with an M-16, while simultaneously directing air strikes into the area and calling for air rescue. After loading all else for evacuation he was fatally wounded from ground fire as he was being raised into the aircraft.

I worked transportation for soldiers deploying to the sand box, I would always tell them as they were exiting, "Thank you for your service, we appreciate you." One day one of the soldiers started laughing. I told him that I'd like to speak to him after everyone else had gotten off. I said, "I meant what I said." His response was, "I know you did, I was just thinking about how different it is now then it was from Vietnam."

The parade of Vietnam veterans down Broadway in Manhattan, 1985; 10 years after the war the American soldiers were finally welcomed home. After their return from Vietnam, many veterans in the US were treated with disrespect. Belated parades and memorials have sought to patch up some of the ill feeling, but many US veterans still feel that there are many areas that still need improvement.
