In SWEDEN, it's not Saint Nick that kids are waiting for but Saint Lucia, the patron saint of light. The celebration begins with St. Lucia's Day on December 13, when the eldest daughter wakes early, puts on a white gown and serves her parents breakfast. In some places, there are also candlelight processions on Christmas Eve.

CHRISTMAS IN SWEDEN - very fun, especially the Lucia.....I gagged though, watching the boy eat all that marzipan~let alone cringing, thinking the Lucia girl had candle wax dripping on her head! Oh! How about sparklers in the Christmas tree!!!

This is the first known picture of a Swedish Lucia. It was painted in 1848 on Koberg Castle in Västergötland (today the residence of Princess Desirée, the king’s sister). The artist was lieutenant-colonel and count Fritz von Dardel, owner of the castle and aide-de-camp to king Karl XV. The picture is a watercolour, painted 1848, now on display in Nordiska Museet, Stockholm.
